Service members may now be eligible to qualify for the Continued Health Care Benefit Program. The program is a voluntary, premium-based health care program administered by Humana Military Health Care Services. It offers temporary health care benefits when a Marine or a Marine’s family members are no longer entitled to military medical benefits.

The program is a temporary bridge between military health benefits and a civilian health plan. It is available for 18 to 36 months. Former uniformed service members, former spouses who have not remarried, adult children and unmarried children by adoption or legal custody are all eligible. Qualification and program requirements also vary depending on a Marine’s active-duty or Reserve status and the duration of coverage the Marine will receive.

Former active-duty service members and their families can obtain coverage when the sponsor is released or discharged from active duty under other-than-adverse conditions and the sponsor was entitled to medical care under a military health plan. Additionally, coverage only applies to the sponsor and their families who are not eligible for benefits under TRICARE or the Transitional Assistance Management Program (TAMP).

For members of the Selected Reserve, Ready Reserve and Retired Reserve, the 18-36 month eligibility begins at the end of active duty service or at the end of the TAMP. Eligibility also begins when coverage under the TRICARE Reserve Select or the TRICARE Retired Reserve program terminates.

To enroll for the program, members are required to submit a complete CHCBP application, a payment in full for the first 90 days of coverage and provide a certificate of release or discharge from active duty.
