Cpl. Michael Kean, a landing support specialist with Combat Logistics Regiment 45, is considered an “outstanding Marine” by his superiors and respected by his peers because of his commitment to working above and beyond his required duties and ability to lead the Marines under his charge throughout his career and during Integrated Training Exercise 4-14. ITX 4-14 is a cornerstone of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force Training Program and is the largest annual Marine Corps Reserve training exercise that helps sharpen skills for Reserve units. ITX employs assets from ground, air and logistics combat elements to demonstrate the ability to deploy rapidly and build up significant combat power necessary to form a MAGTF. Montford Point Marines Sgt. Riley A. McCray and Cpl. Lynn L. Williams are presented with the Congressional Gold Medal by Capt. Caitlin T. Ferrarell at a ceremony here Sept. 21. Ferrarell is the Inspector-Instructor for Detachment 2, Beach and Terminal Operations Company A, 4th Landing Support Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group, in Concord, Calif. The pair earned the award by presidential order for being a few of the 22,000 African-American Marines to serve in the Corps between 1942 and 1949 during a time of common racism and segregation. Marine Reserve units from 22 states around the nation have been tasked to deliver 78 medals to Montford Point Marines who weren’t in attendance at the July ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Sergeant Riley A. McCray, a Montford Point Marine, in his Service “A” Uniform. McCray is now 87 and resides in Oakland, Calif. McCray earned the Congressional Gold Medal by presidential order for being one of the 20,000 African-American Marines to serve in the Corps between 1942 and 1949 during a time of racism and segregation. “That was the worst thing that I have experienced in my life,” said McCray, who was from then-violent west Philadelphia. “It was worse than my neighborhood at the time.”

Marines from Concord, Calif., present the nation’s colors during a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony here Sept. 21. The ceremony was held in honor of two Montford Point Marines, Sgt. Riley A. McCray and Cpl. Lynn L. Williams, to recognize them for their service during a time of racism and segregation in the 1940s. The Marines detachment falls under Beach and Terminal Operations Company A, 4th Landing Support Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group. In total, Marine Reserve units from 22 states will present the award to 78 Montford Point Marines.
