Members of the local Molly Marine chapter of the Women Marines Association gather around the Molly Marine statue they restore every year. This original Molly Marine statue was sculpted in New Orleans in 1943 in order to assist in recruiting women during World War II. The statue now resides on the corner of Canal St. and Elk Pl. in the French Quarter. The Molly Marine chapter was awarded the Ruth and Dick Broe Award, the most prestigious award given to WMA chapters for overall outstanding chapter achievement, at their most recent national convention and professional development conference that took place in Philadelphia from Aug. 30 through Sept. 4.

Marines with 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, fold the flag during the funeral for a Marine veteran. The battalion has been averaging 350 funerals per year. So far this year, the battalion has covered 254 funerals. Additionally, “Chicago’s Own” provided the second-highest number of funeral services in the nation last year, giving proper burial honors to 311 fallen Marines.
