Staff Sgt. Alec Haralovich shows his Marines and friends the Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone Award for Courage and Commitment after a ceremony here, May 19, 2013. The Marines assigned to Company E, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, gathered together to congratulate Haralovich for earning the distinction. After the ceremony, Haralovich left promptly to begin a nearly year-long deployment to train foreign forces overseas in the coming months. Haralovich is a reconnaissance Marine from Bloomington, Ind. He is assigned to Company E, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve.

The 4th Reconnaissance Battalion commander, Lt. Col. Dion A. Anglin, presents Staff Sgt. Alec Haralovich with the Gunnery Sgt. Anglin, who is from Warshaw, Ind., traveled from his San Antonio-based unit headquarters to bestow Haralovich with the honor. Harolovich,who is from Bloomington, Ind., is currently assigned to Company E, a section assign to Anglin.

1st Sgt. Anthony J. Velarde, a first sergeant with 1st Civil Affairs Group, Marine Forces Reserve, patrols in Sarbesha, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, as a company gunnery sergeant for Company F, 2nd Battalion, 5rd Marine Regiment, in May, 2012. Velarde was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with a combat distinguishing device for his actions in March that year, when he assisted Marines who were pinned-down during an attack by insurgents.

1st Sgt. Anthony J. He received the medal for his actions while deployed as a company gunnery sergeant with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Hershel “Woody” Williams accepted the dedication of a 68,000 square foot military training center in his name in Fairmont, W. Va. Oct. 18. Williams earned his Medal of Honor during the battle for Iwo Jima in 1945. After the Enlisted Awards Parade on Sept. 26, Gen. James F. Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, and Sgt. Maj. Micheal P. Barrett, sergeant major of the Marine Corps, were invited to remain on Lejeune Field at Marine Corps Base Quantico to visit with the award winners. Sgt. Dante Capane was selected to receive the award and represent the best of the 39,000 Marine Reservists.

Members of the local Molly Marine chapter of the Women Marines Association gather around the Molly Marine statue they restore every year. This original Molly Marine statue was sculpted in New Orleans in 1943 in order to assist in recruiting women during World War II. The statue now resides on the corner of Canal St. and Elk Pl. in the French Quarter. The Molly Marine chapter was awarded the Ruth and Dick Broe Award, the most prestigious award given to WMA chapters for overall outstanding chapter achievement, at their most recent national convention and professional development conference that took place in Philadelphia from Aug. 30 through Sept. 4.

Winston Burns Sr. was presented with a bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal Sept. 10, at Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans. Approximately 420 Marines who attended segregated basic training at Montford Point, N.C., received the medal in ceremonies across the country this summer. The award was symbolically presented to all Montford Point Marines during a ceremony inside Emancipation Hall in the U.S. Capitol June 27. William McDowell, a Montford Point veteran himself, received the medal that day with roughly 400 of his fellows in attendance. The next day, those 400 received replicas of the original gold medal, which is currently being prepared for display in the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Va.
