Marines, all participants of the Sapper Leaders Course, spent one day executing urban demolition in order to learn advanced tactics, techniques and procedures in the combat engineer military occupational specialty. The course was the first of its kind, allowing Reserve Marines to participate with active-duty Marines to receive advanced training in the combat engineer MOS.

A Sapper Leadership Course student charges a CD 450-J ignition device during rehearsal for the urban demolition range, July 24, 2013. The device, also called a “j-box,” is a lightweight, battery-operated blasting device that the combat engineers used during urban demolition. The device requires a Marine to hold a “charge” button and count-off loudly until the “ready to fire” indicator lights up. At that moment, the breacher will push the “fire” button, igniting the explosion.

Brig. Gen. James S. Hartsell, 4th Marine Division commanding general, tours the training area with Lt. Col. Hartsell attended the exercise to oversee more than 2,000 of his Marines participating in the exercise. Heavy Metal 2013 is the second year the exercise has been offered as an outlet for Marines on Reserve duty to complete their annual training. The exercise brings together units from across the country to form a single task force. The training also includes counter-improvised-explosive-device convoy courses, combat life saving, and numerous firing ranges to name a few. Heavy Metal will conclude at the end of June.

Marines with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, fire the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon on the range here as part of Exercise Heavy Metal 2013, June 20. The team of Marines that carry the light machine gun includes the firing Marine, the target sighter/reloader, and a third man that brings ammunition when needed. The Marines fired on targets up to 1,200 meters away exhibiting one of the capabilities of the Heavy Metal Task Force. The exercise allowed the Marines to hone their skills as a unit for more than their monthly two-day drill periods.
