Williams earned his Medal of Honor during the battle for Iwo Jima in 1945. After the Enlisted Awards Parade on Sept. 26, Gen. James F. Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps, and Sgt. Maj. Micheal P. Barrett, sergeant major of the Marine Corps, were invited to remain on Lejeune Field at Marine Corps Base Quantico to visit with the award winners. Sgt. Dante Capane was selected to receive the award and represent the best of the 39,000 Marine Reservists.

Marines with Company B, 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, out of Louisiana, unload thousands of pounds of illegal drugs from a vehicle during interdiction operations in southwestern Afghanistan, May 9. Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463 and 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment supported efforts to disrupt the enemy's drug smuggling operations. Such missions have proven effective in disrupting the enemy's movement and limiting their finances from the illegal drug trade.
