Age 23, Niles, Michigan Hospitalman Rast died of wounds sustained while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego and deployed as part of the Health Service Augmentation Program. While deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, II Marine Expeditionary Force (FWD). he died on April 6, 2011.
