U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Justin A. Napier, a trombone instrumentalist with the Marine Forces Reserve Band, was recognized and awarded as the 2025 Marine Corps Musician of the Year.

Napier’s introduction to music began in middle school where he initially expressed interest in the saxophone and drums. He excelled on the trombone, cultivating his passion for the instrument with the encouragement of a teacher who provided long-term mentorship and training. Over time, the trombone became central to Napier’s personal and professional identity.

“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve felt as though the trombone’s been an extension of my voice and a vehicle for communication and connection,” said Napier.

Napier started his undergraduate studies at Indiana University, where he pursued music education and music performance with a minor in anthropology and ethnology. Throughout his learning experience, he demonstrated aptitude with multiple instruments while also serving as an instructor. These prepared him for the broad musical demands of the Marine Corps.

“I saw the Marine Corps as an opportunity for adventure,” Napier explained. “But also, the challenge of what it meant be a Marine and a musician absolutely appealed to me.”

While stationed at Marine Forces Reserve, Napier has performed in multiple ensembles and collaborated with musicians across the Marine Corps band community. Built on trust and accountability, the Marine Forces Reserve Band’s culture fosters an environment where musicians challenge one another to grow while striving for excellence.

“Trust ensures that criticism is received as a professional development rather than a personal attack.” said Napier. “That trust builds the camaraderie necessary for our band to perform at the highest possible level.”

Napier was awarded Musician of the Year by dedicating himself to both being a Marine as well as a musician. Outside formal duties, he engages with fellow Marines through shared interests, such as hosting game nights or movie nights at Napier's house, strengthening bonds that support both morale and mission effectiveness.

“Developing as a musician while developing myself as a mentor really pushes me in multiple areas of my collateral billets, which is a big contributor to my Marine Corps career.” said Napier.

In the near future, Napier plans to attend the Naval School of Music to increase his musical proficiency and develop his personal and professional leadership capabilities. He wants to train future Marines within his musical occupation to be well rounded and proficient with their musical careers and warfighting responsibilities.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve and to share music with others,” said Napier. “At the end of the day, both are about bringing people together and giving something bigger than yourself.”
