Colonel Michael J. Gann II

CO, 14th Marines

Colonel Gann assumed command of the 14th Marine Regiment on 18 May 2013.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1983 and served over six years in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve attaining the rank of Sergeant. He graduated from Wichita State University in May 1989 and accepted a commission as a Second Lieutenant.

Upon completion of The Basic School and Field Artillery Officer's Basic Course, he reported to 2d Bn, 11th Marines in October of 1990 for duty as an FO, FDO, and XO for Battery E; and Artillery LNO and XO for Battery G. During this period he participated in Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm and Operation Sea Angel in Bangladesh with the 5th MEB, and Operations Continued Hope/Quick Draw in Somalia with the 11th MEU (SOC).

Promoted to Captain in July 1994, he was assigned to MCRD San Diego as a Series Officer and the G-3 Operations Officer. Selected to attend the Field Artillery Officer Advance Course, he graduated in December 1996 and reported to 3d Bn, 11th Marines for duties as the Assistant Operations Officer, HQ Battery Commander and Commanding Officer of Battery K.

Promoted to Major in July of 1999, he reported to 1st Bn, 14th Marines for duties as the Assistant Bn Inspector-Instructor. Selected to attend the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, he graduated in June of 2003 and assumed duties as the Joint Fire Support Exchange Officer for XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, NC. During this period he served as Corps Fires Planner and Assistant Fire Support Coordinator; and deployed for a year as the Deputy Fire Support Coordinator for Multi National Corps-Iraq (MNC-I). He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in July 2005.

In July 2006, he returned to 11th Marines for duty as the regimental Operations Officer and Executive Officer. He assumed command of 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO) in November 2007 and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Selected to attend the U.S. Army War College in 2009, he graduated with a master’s degree in Strategic Studies.

Reporting to II MEF (FWD) in July 2010, he was assigned as the Operations Officer for Afghan National Security Force Development (ANSF) and deployed for a year to Helmand Province in Afghanistan. He was promoted to his present rank in July 2011. In August 2012, he reported to the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center where he served as the Assistant Chief of Staff G-3 for the MAGTF Training Command.

His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with one gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
