Captain Garrett J. Gundy is a native of in Newport Beach, CA. After graduating cum laude from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in June 2015, he was selected for and attended Marine Corps Officer Candidate School on May 28, 2016. He was subsequently commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on August 6, 2016. He then attended The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, followed by the Military Police Officer Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
In July 2017, Captain Gundy reported to Camp Pendleton, California, where he was assigned to 1st Law Enforcement Battalion. He assumed platoon command of Second Military Police Platoon, Company A.
In June 2018, he deployed as a joint individual augment in support of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), serving as a Protective Services Detail Advisor, with additional duties as a Battle Captain and Mission Assurance Assessment Officer for the CJ36 Security and Protection Cell.
After a successful tour with CJTF-OIR, Captain Gundy returned to 1st Law Enforcement Battalion in January 2019 and assumed the role of Executive Officer of Company A. Shortly after his return, he deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border under Task Force Wire to conduct force protection for Marines reinforcing the border wall. He returned in April 2019 with his company to continue daily operations in support of deployment and training cycles. While serving with Company A, Captain Gundy supported several training exercises and deployments, including Steel Knight 2017, Steel Knight 2019, ITX, Task Force Wire, Task Force Tarawa, and the 11th and 13th MEU’s. Additionally, he trained Protective Service Details for two separate task forces and certified over 200 Marines in non-lethal weapons capabilities.
In February 2020, Captain Gundy served as the Future Operations Officer for 1st Law Enforcement Battalion before transitioning into the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) in August 2020. While in the IRR, Captain Gundy graduated with Beta Gamma Sigma honors from the University of Southern California (USC), earning his Master of Business Administration (MBA) in May 2023 before returning to the Selected Marine Corps Reserve and 4th Law Enforcement Battalion in April 2024.
In March 2025, Captain Gundy assumed company command of Delta Company, 4th Law Enforcement Battalion.
Captain Gundy’s military decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Citation, Operation Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Service Medal.
