Sergeant Major Kevin M. Walsh
Sergeant Major Walsh is a native of Elkton, Maryland and was raised in Nottingham, Pennsylvania. He attended recruit training aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC in 1995. Upon graduation from recruit training, he attended Field Artillery Cannon Crewman course at Fort Sill, OK, where he was the honor graduate and was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal. He then reported to 5th Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he served with Battery R for 3 years.
During his time with Battery R, he participated in two unit deployments to Okinawa, Japan and numerous Combined Arms Exercises. Sergeant Major Walsh deployed to Panama as an augment to Company C, 2d LAR Battalion where he served as a rifle squad leader. During this deployment he attended the Army Jungle Warfare School and Army Air Assault School.
Throughout his time with Battery R, he held a variety of billets which included: Cannon Crewman, Howitzer Section Chief, and Guns Platoon Sergeant/Local Security Chief. He was meritoriously promoted to Cpl in Dec 1996 and then meritoriously promoted to Sgt in August 1997.
Upon leaving active duty in September, 1999, Sergeant Major Walsh reported to Battery I, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines in Reading Pennsylvania for duty as a Howitzer Section Chief. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in May 2000 at which time he assumed the duties of Battery Gunnery Sergeant. Sergeant Major Walsh was mobilized and deployed as a Military Transition Team member in May 2005. He served as an advisor to a small level unit in the Iraqi army operating in the areas of Habbaniyah and Ramadi. While deployed, he was selected for promotion to Gunnery Sergeant and was promoted in June of 2006. He served in the billets of Howitzer Section Chief, Guns Platoon Sergeant, Battery Gunnery Sergeant, and Acting Guns Platoon Commander during his tour with Battery I.
Sergeant Major Walsh was selected for promotion to First Sergeant and transferred to Headquarters & Service Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, Baltimore, Maryland in June 2010, where he assumed the role of Company First Sergeant. He served in this role for four years, taking on the additional duties of Acting Battalion Sergeant Major for one year.
Sergeant Major Walsh was selected for promotion to his current rank in April 2014, and transferred to 2d Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment in June 2014. He served as the Battalion Sergeant Major until August 2016 subsequently transferring to the Individual Ready Reserve. He was assigned to MWSS 472 in February 2018 and is currently serving as the Squadron Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Walsh’s personal decorations include the Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal with 1 gold star in lieu of second award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 gold stars in lieu of third award, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and he is a member of the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara.
