Lieutenant Colonel Austin Duncan
Inspector-Instructor
Intelligence Support Battalion

A native of Harrisburg, Illinois, Lieutenant Colonel Austin Duncan received his commission in 2007 graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. Following training as a Ground Intelligence Officer and Scout Sniper Platoon Commander, Second Lieutenant Duncan reported to 2nd Marine Division. From 2009-2010, he deployed as the Intelligence and Reconnaissance Advisor on a Military Transition Team to Mosul, Iraq for 6 months and Al Anbar, Iraq for 6 months in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.

Transitioning to 3d Battalion, 6th Marines, he served as the Battalion Intelligence Officer from 2010-2011, deploying to Marjah, Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. From 2011-2012, he commanded Headquarters and Service Company, 3d Battalion, 6th Marines. In 2012, Captain Duncan reported to Naval Postgraduate School, graduating in 2014 with a Master of Science in Information Warfare Systems Engineering and a Master of Business Administration in Information Systems Management. He served his graduate education utilization tour as the Technical Information Operations Planner with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), deploying in support of OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE in 2015. From 2016-2017, he served as an Information Operations Planner at I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF).

Major Duncan reported to Marine Corps University Command & Staff College in Quantico, VA in 2018, graduating with a Master of Military Studies concentrated in Future Concept Development as a Gray Scholar. He then served as Speechwriter to the 37th and 38th Commandant of the Marine Corps. From 2020-2022, he served as the Intelligence Officer for the 11th MEU, deploying on Western Pacific Patrol 21.2, recognized as the 2021 Intelligence Unit of the Year and with the 2021 Marine Corps Information Environment Enterprise (MCIEE) Innovation Award. In 2022, Major Duncan served as the Executive Officer at the 11th MEU.

From 2022-2024, Lieutenant Colonel Duncan served as I MEF Deputy G-9 for experimentation, capability, and concept development, before reporting to I MEF Information Group as the Information Warfare Coordinator and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as a USMC Service Chief Fellow. In June 2024, Lieutenant Colonel Duncan reported to Intelligence Support Battalion to serve as Inspector-Instructor.

Lieutenant Colonel Duncan currently serves as a non-resident Fellow of the Marine Corps University Brute Krulak Center for Innovation and Future Warfare, member of the Marine Corps Gazette Editorial Advisory Panel, Adjunct Faculty Instructor for Expeditionary Warfare School, and editor on the Destination Unknown project.
