Lieutenant Colonel Michael W. Thatcher
Battalion Commander
3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment

Lieutenant Colonel Michael Thatcher was commissioned as a second lieutenant upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy in May 2006.  He reported to The Basic School where he completed the Basic Officer Course and the Infantry Officer Course, becoming an infantry officer.  Lieutenant Thatcher reported to 1st Battalion, 6th Marines in 2007 and was assigned to Company C.
 
While in C/1/6 "COLDSTEEL", he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander during a deployment with the 24th MEU to Helmand Province Afghanistan where BLT 1/6 fought in the Garmsir District.  In 2008 he was then assigned to Weapons Company, 1/6 as the 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander. In this capacity he deployed with the Battalion to Helmand Province, Afghanistan as part of the 2d MEB where 1/6 fought to seize Marjah.
 
Following his time in 1/6, Captain Thatcher reported to Marine Corps Security Force Training Company, Marine Corps Security Force Regiment for duties as the operations officer.  In May 2011, he was assigned as the company executive officer until his separation from active duty in November of 2012.
 
Captain Thatcher affiliated with Company K, 3d Battalion 25th Marines in late 2012 and served as the company executive officer, the fire support team leader, and a platoon commander.  During this time he participated in annual trainings in Bridgeport CA, and Ft AP Hill, VA.  In December 2014, Captain Thatcher assumed command of Company K and led them through Integrated Training Exercise (ITX) 4-15. 
 
Captain Thatcher assumed command of Weapons Company, 3d Battalion 25th Marines in June 2016 and led them on three annual training exercises aboard Camp Grayling, MI and Camp Ethan Allen, VT.  He relinquished command of Weapons Company in September 2018 and was assigned as the 3/25 battalion operations officer. In this capacity, he participated in Integrated Training Exercise (ITX) 4-19.  Following ITX, Major Thatcher assumed duties as the 3/25 battalion executive officer and participated in annual training aboard Ft Pickett, VA.  
 
Major Thatcher joined the operations section at 25th Marine Regiment in December 2020.  He served as the assistant operations officer and participated in ITX 4-21.  He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 2022 and served as the operations officer for SPMAGTF-25 during exercise UNITAS LXIII in Brazil.  He was selected to command 3d Battalion 25th Marines and assumed those duties in September 2023.
