Sergeant Major Robert W. Poor
Sergeant Major, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 49

Sergeant Major Poor enlisted in the Marine Corps on 28 January 1997 and graduated from Charlie Company, First Recruit Training Battalion, Parris Island, South Carolina on 9 May 1997.  After graduation of Recruit Training he completed Marine Combat Training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  Upon completion of Marine Combat Training, he attended Aviation Maintenance Administration School at Naval Air Station Meridian, Meridian Mississippi.  He graduated with the assigned Military Occupational Specialty of 6046, Aviation Maintenance Administration Clerk.

Private First Class Poor then reported to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron VMFA-142, Marine Air Group 42, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, in Marietta, Georgia.  While serving in the Maintenance Administration shop, he held the billets of Maintenance Administration Clerk, Technical Directive Manager, and Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge respectively.  During the period of August 1997 to December 2003, he completed numerous Combined Air Exercises, and 4 International Exercises. 

In December 2003, Sergeant Poor reported to Headquarters Marine Corps Forces Europe, in Stuttgart, Germany as the Training Chief for a 6 month tour.  He returned home and dropped to the Inactive Ready Reserves.  In September 2004, Sergeant Poor was mobilized to active duty.  He reported to Headquarters Marine Corps Forces Europe, in Stuttgart, Germany as a Command Operations Center Watch Chief.  In December of 2004, Sergeant Poor was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.  He extended his mobilization tour for two more years as a Command Operation Center Watch Chief.  In October 2006, Staff Sergeant Poor was selected to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to serve as a Hospital Liaison Officer.  He returned home in November of 2007.

In July 2008, Staff Sergeant Poor was mobilized again.  He report to the Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 3, 3RD Marine Aircraft Wing, in Miramar, California as the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Maintenance Administration Shop.  He was then deployed to Iraq in support of Iraqi Freedom and attached to Marine Air Logistics Squadron 16 (REIN).  He returned home in March 2009 and attended the Career Couse in Quantic, VA.

In June of 2009, Staff Sergeant Poor reported to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron HMLA-773, Marine Air Group 49, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing.  In April 2010 he was promoted to the Rank of Gunnery Sergeant.  While serving in the unit, he held the billets of Maintenance Administration Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in charge, Squadron Gunnery Sergeant, Assistant Maintenance Chief and Reserve Maintenance Chief.

In June 2015, Gunnery Sergeant was promoted to First Sergeant and reported to Personnel Retrieval and Processing (PRP) Company as the Company First Sergeant.

In June 2018, First Sergeant Poor reported to Kilo Company 3/23 for duty as the Company First Sergeant.

In June of 2019, First Sergeant Poor reported to Alpha Company 1/25 for duty as the Company First Sergeant.  The Battalion was mobilized for Unit Deployment Program 20.1 West.  During this time he participated in Bilateral Exercise Fuji Viper, Forest Light and Northern Viper.  He returned home in June 2020.

In July of 2020, First Sergeant Poor was promoted to Sergeant Major and transferred to Marine Air Logistic Squadron – 49.  He reported to MALS-49 as the Squadron Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Poor is employed as a Quality Engineer with CryoLife Incorporated.  Sergeant Major Poor holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a Major Economics and Finance from Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, Georgia.  He currently resides in Woodstock, Georgia.

Sergeant Major Poor’s personal awards include:  Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2nd Award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
