Company Sergeant Major, 3rd Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company Sergeant Major Dean Vance

Sergeant Major Vance is a native of Omaha, Nebraska. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on August 8, 1989 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego California. Upon completion of recruit training he reported to Marine Corps Combat Training (MCT) at Camp Pendleton, California. Following MCT, he attended the Machine Gunner Course at Camp Pendleton, California. After completion of MOS training then, PFC Vance reported to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California. 
Lance Corporal Vance completed the Recon Indoctrination Program at 1st Recon Battalion then airborne training at Fort Benning and deployed with Bravo Company, 1st Recon Battalion in support of Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Sea Angel.

Upon return from deployment 1st Recon Battalion was disband and Bravo Company became 5th Marines Regimental Recon Company. Promoted to Corporal in November 1992, he deployed with 2d Platoon, 5th Marines Regimental Recon Company after completing over the horizon maritime navigation and the recon and surveillance course. While on WESTPAC he took part in the initial landing supporting Operation Restore Hope in Somalia.

In 1994 Sergeant Vance was assigned as a Recon Team Leader for 2d Platoon Headquarters Battalion Recon Company. Sergeant Vance attended Army Ranger School, Navy Dive school, improvised explosives course, and the LAR V transition course then deployed on WESTPAC.

Upon return from deployment Sergeant Vance was assigned to the Very Shallow Water Mine Counter Measures Test Detachment (VSWMCM) with Explosive Ordinance Disposal Group 1 in Coronado, Ca. While at VSWMCM Sergeant Vance attended Emergency Medical Technician school and served as the Intelligence officer, on the research and development team, as primary diver.

In November 2002, he joined Company E, 2D Battalion, 24th Marines in Des Moines, IA. While with Company E he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II in 2004-2005 as Platoon Guide. Upon return he served as the Platoon Sergeant and then Platoon Commander. In 2006 Staff Sergeant Vance was assigned as the Company Gunnery Sergeant.

Staff Sergeant Vance attended the Electronic Warfare Course at Fort Huachuca, AZ then deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 8-1 in 2007. In April 2008 Staff Sergeant Vance received a combat meritorious promotion to Gunnery Sergeant. Upon return from deployment Gunnery Sergeant Vance was assigned to the billet of Company First Sergeant.

In May 2012 First Sergeant Vance was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 2D Battalion 14th Marines in Grand Prairie, Texas.

In May 2016 Sergeant Major Vance was assigned 3D ANGLICO in Bell, CA.

His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal with 4 gold stars, Combat Action Ribbon with 2 gold stars, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
