The Hospital Corps celebrated their 117th birthday this year. Hospital corpsmen started out as "loblolly boys" on warships, assisting the ship's surgeon with medical procedures. Gregg T. Habel, executive director of Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North, addresses the audience at the Navy Hospital Corpsman Birthday cake-cutting ceremony at Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans, June 17, 2015. The hospital corps celebrated their 117th birthday this year. Habel spoke of the importance of hospital corpsmen and shared several unique experiences. The rating of hospital corpsman is the most decorated in the United States Navy, with 22 Medals of Honor, 178 Navy Crosses, 31 Navy Distinguished Service Medals, 946 Silver Stars, over 1,500 Bronze Stars and 20 naval ships named after hospital corpsmen.

The first piece of cake is always traditionally given to the guest of honor, the second to the oldest Sailor present. Upon receiving the second piece of cake, the oldest Sailor will in turn pass it on to the youngest Sailor signifying the passing of experience and knowledge from the old to the young.
